Desmond Connell - Retirement As Archbishop

Retirement As Archbishop

On 26 April 2004, Desmond Connell retired as archbishop, handing the diocese over to the co-adjutor Diarmuid Martin. All bishops submit their resignation to the Pope on their 75th birthday. Connell's was accepted shortly after he turned 78. Cardinal Connell attended the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin in June 2012 and concelebrated at the Statio Orbis mass in Croke Park Stadium.

Famous quotes containing the words retirement and/or archbishop:

Adultery itself in its principle is many times nothing but a curious inquisition after, and envy of another man’s enclosed pleasures: and there have been many who refused fairer objects that they might ravish an enclosed woman from her retirement and single possessor.
    Jeremy Taylor (1613–1667)

The archbishop is away. The church is gray.
He has left his robes folded in camphor
And, dressed in black, he walks
    Among fireflies.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)
