Derry/Londonderry Name Dispute

Derry/Londonderry Name Dispute

The names of the city, county, and district of Derry or Londonderry in Northern Ireland are the subject of a naming dispute between Irish nationalists and unionists. Generally, although not always, nationalists favour using the name Derry, and unionists using Londonderry. Legally, the city and county are called "Londonderry", while the local government district is called "Derry".

The debate became particularly politicised at the outset of the Troubles, with the mention of either name acting as a shibboleth used to associate the speaker with one of Northern Ireland's two main communities.

Famous quotes containing the word dispute:

As for the dispute about solitude and society, any comparison is impertinent. It is an idling down on the plane at the base of a mountain, instead of climbing steadily to its top.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
