Scandal Over Anti-war Protest
In June 2010, while six graduating seniors who were about to enter the U.S. armed forces were being honored at school assembly for the graduating class, two teachers stood up in silent protest, with one holding a sign that read “End War." Boston television station WBZ-TV broadcast a news story about the event and some parents, students, and bloggers called for the teachers to be fired. The teachers were placed on administrative leave. One of the teachers, Marybeth Verani, said of the incident: “I’m showing, in a democracy, how to express dissent.”

Famous quotes containing the words scandal and/or protest:
“In London, love and scandal are considered the best sweeteners of tea.”
—John Osborne (19291994)
“[University students] hated the hypocrisy of adult society, the rigidity of its political institutions, the impersonality of its bureaucracies. They sought to create a society that places human values before materialistic ones, that has a little less head and a little more heart, that is dominated by self-interest and loves its neighbor more. And they were persuaded that group protest of a militant nature would advance those goals.”
—Muriel Beadle (b. 1915)
