Democratic Progressive Party (Malawi) - History

History

The DPP party is an offshoot of the United Democratic Front. The UDF was formed by Bingu wa Mutharika and Bakili Muluzi and came in to power from 1994 under Muluzi. After Muluzis two terms were over, wa Mutharika succeeded him as head of the party and nation. However Muluzi continued to intervene in the rulings of the party therefore wa Mutharika formed his own party, the Democratic Progressive Party during this time. Many UDF members defected to the new DPP party. The party and wa Mutharika won elections in 2009, and continued to rule the country.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

No cause is left but the most ancient of all, the one, in fact, that from the beginning of our history has determined the very existence of politics, the cause of freedom versus tyranny.
    Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)

Bias, point of view, fury—are they ... so dangerous and must they be ironed out of history, the hills flattened and the contours leveled? The professors talk ... about passion and point of view in history as a Calvinist talks about sin in the bedroom.
    Catherine Drinker Bowen (1897–1973)

America is, therefore the land of the future, where, in the ages that lie before us, the burden of the World’s history shall reveal itself. It is a land of desire for all those who are weary of the historical lumber-room of Old Europe.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)
