Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens - Varsity Sports

Varsity Sports

UD varsity sports compete in the NCAA Division-I (FCS for football). Delaware is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in all sports. Delaware was a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference in football through the 2006 season, after which the CAA took over management of the A-10 football conference.

The Blue Hens have won nine CAA Championships since joining in 2001: one for the women's 2004 field hockey team, the 2007-2010-2011 men's lacrosse teams, the 2005-2012-2013 women's basketball teams, the 2007 women's volleyball team, and the 2010 football team (shared with William & Mary). Unofficially, the women's rowing team has won the CAA title four times since 2001, placing second the other two times.

In January 2011, UD announced that men's cross country and outdoor track & field teams would be reclassified to club status, while women's golf would be added.

Famous quotes containing the word sports:

Short of a wholesale reform of college athletics—a complete breakdown of the whole system that is now focused on money and power—the women’s programs are just as doomed as the men’s are to move further and further away from the academic mission of their colleges.... We have to decide if that’s the kind of success for women’s sports that we want.
Christine H. B. Grant, U.S. university athletic director. As quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education, p. A42 (May 12, 1993)
