Deforestation of The Amazon Rainforest - Future

Future

At 2007 rates, it was considered that in two decades the Amazon Rainforest would be reduced by 40%. The rate of deforestation is now slowing, and in 2011 deforestation figures were the slowest on record, although the forest is still shrinking.

Norwegian prime minister Jens Stoltenberg announced on September 16, 2008, that the Norwegian Government would donate US $1 billion to the newly established Amazon fund. The money from this fund will go to projects aimed at slowing down the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.

Famous quotes containing the word future:

‘Tis the world-old way of the rain
When it comes to a mountain farm
To exact for a present gain
    A little of future harm.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Peace does not appear so distant as it did. I hope it will come soon, and come to stay; and so come as to be worth the keeping in all future time. It will then have been proved that, among free men, there can be no successful appeal from the ballot to the bullet; and that they who take such appeal are sure to lose their case, and pay the cost.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

We accept and welcome ... as conditions to which we must accommodate ourselves, great inequality of environment; the concentration of business, industrial and commercial, in the hands of a few; and the law of competition between these, as being not only beneficial, but essential for the future progress of the race.
    Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919)
