Decatur's Squadron in The Second Barbary War - Gunboat Diplomacy

Gunboat Diplomacy

Swiftly Decatur's Squadron captured the Algerian flagship Mashouda, as well as others. He sailed into Algiers on the 28th of June, he stationed a gunship at the mouth of its port (an early example of "Gunboat Diplomacy") and within 48 hours he had an agreement with the Dey of Algeria. In return for him returning the captured ships the Bey would release his ten American hostages and pay $10,000.

Decatur then went on to deal with the other two Barbary kingdoms of Tunis and Tripoli, in a most swift fashion. By the end of his tour Decatur's fleet had beaten 29 Barbary ships, either through sinking or capture.

Famous quotes containing the word diplomacy:

There are few ironclad rules of diplomacy but to one there is no exception. When an official reports that talks were useful, it can safely be concluded that nothing was accomplished.
