Saunders lives in Cheshire and his closest neighbour was Gary Speed, his former international team mate. Following Speed's death, Saunders described himself as 'flabbergasted' upon hearing the news.
He is married to Helen. His son Callum plays for Crewe Alexandra youth team as a forward.
