Famous quotes containing the words tribute, grateful and/or dead:
“It is a tribute to the peculiar horror of contemporary life that it makes the worst features of earlier timesthe stupefaction of the masses, the obsessed and driven lives of the bourgeoisieseem attractive by comparison.”
—Christopher Lasch (b. 1932)
“The only ones who are really grateful for the war are the wild ducks, such a lot of them in the marshes of the Rhone and so peaceful ... because all the shot-guns have been taken away completely taken away and nobody can shoot with them nobody at all and the wild ducks are very content. They act as of they had never been shot at, never, it is so easy to form old habits again, so very easy.”
—Gertrude Stein (18741946)
“I love man-kind, but I hate the institutions of the dead unkind. Men execute nothing so faithfully as the wills of the dead, to the last codicil and letter. They rule this world, and the living are but their executors. Such foundation too have our lectures and our sermons, commonly.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
