Reception

Upon its release Dead or Alive 3 received positive reviews. In Japan, Famitsu scored the game a 37 out of 40. GameSpot stated "Once you get past its graphics, you'll find that Dead or Alive 3 doesn't offer much of anything that hasn't been done in other 3D fighting games," giving the game a rating of 7.9/10. IGN on the other hand, gave the game a high rating of 9.4/10, stating it "represents the new standard of excellence that only the Xbox can deliver" and praising the game for its great attention to detail and its vast improvements on its predecessor.

Dead or Alive 3 sold more than one million copies in the first five months after its release. The game became the third best-selling launch title next to Microsoft's Halo: Combat Evolved and Project Gotham Racing and the first third-party Xbox game to garner Platinum status.

In 2011, Complex ranked it as the 15th best fighting game of all time.

Famous quotes containing the word reception:

But in the reception of metaphysical formula, all depends, as regards their actual and ulterior result, on the pre-existent qualities of that soil of human nature into which they fall—the company they find already present there, on their admission into the house of thought.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)

He’s leaving Germany by special request of the Nazi government. First he sends a dispatch about Danzig and how 10,000 German tourists are pouring into the city every day with butterfly nets in their hands and submachine guns in their knapsacks. They warn him right then. What does he do next? Goes to a reception at von Ribbentropf’s and keeps yelling for gefilte fish!
    Billy Wilder (b. 1906)

Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody’s face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind of reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended with it.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)
