DCU Students' Union - National Representation

National Representation

DCU Students Union is not a member of the Union of Students in Ireland, having disaffiliated in 2002 after a vote of the student body.

DCUSU is, however, a member of the Forum for University Students' Unions (FUSU), a less formal consultative body whose purpose is "To facilitate the exchange of information and discussion of ideas between the Unions, leading to the formation of common policy and the planning of co-ordinated campaigns." FUSU has been criticized for being an organisation in name only, as it has no contact address, no policy documents, no staff or elected officers and no constitution.

During the first meeting of the Union Council in October 2010, it was decided that there would be a referendum of the issue of whether to reaffiliate with the USI. The Referendum was held in November 2010 and it was decided that DCUSU would remain disaffiliated. Of the over 8000 students eligible to vote, fewer than 1500 votes were cast

Famous quotes containing the word national:

What do we mean by patriotism in the context of our times? I venture to suggest that what we mean is a sense of national responsibility ... a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.
    Adlai Stevenson (1900–1965)
