Dhawan is married to Karuna Dhawan and has two children, Rohit and Varun. Rohit has debuted as a director with the film Desi Boyz, while Varun has been launched as an actor in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year. Dhawan's brother is actor Anil Dhawan. He considers Manmohan Desai as his guru. He claims that that he has always been following his ways of filmmaking.
