Later Years

After Bernard Parks was denied a second term as Chief of Police by Mayor James K. Hahn in 2002, Gates, aged 75, told CNN that he intended to apply for his old job as LAPD chief. On April 16, 2010, Gates died at his home in Dana Point, California at the age of 83 after a battle with bladder cancer.

    Charles Krauthammer (b. 1950)
