Sardar Darbara Singh was then elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1984, and served with distinction in Council of States being elected the Chairman of the House Committee in 1986. Sardar Darbara Singh made a place for himself as a good Congress party functionary & a good manager of party affairs, having been posted as 'Observer' and high command enforcer in different provinces. As a result of his success in managing party affairs. he was entrusted with several crisis management assignments within the Congress party, especially in its state units by Rajiv Gandhi. However, questions remained over his handling of the Punjab crisis, limiting his success as Chief Minister.
He died after a short illness on 10 March 1990. He was survived by his wife, Sardarni Gurbachan Kaur and four children.
