The district has a population density of 59 inhabitants per square kilometre (150 /sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 11.9%. Dantewada has a sex ratio of 1022 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 42.67%.

The district has a population of 719,065 (2001 census), of which 476,945 (66%) are tribal peoples (adivasis). The district is divided into 7 tehsils, Dantewada, Gidam, Kuwakonda, Katekalyan, Chhindgarh, Sukma, and Konta.
