History
The Shipyard was founded in 1927 by Jan and Marinus Damen in a self-built workshop. In 1954 their 200th ship was delivered.
Kommer Damen, son of Jan Damen, took over as manager of technical services in 1967 and began trying to shorten delivery times by building hulls to stock and then finishing them as required by customers. This change in strategy led to a difficult time for the company as the investment needed was high and not all of the employees shared Kommer's ideas.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.”
—Umberto Eco (b. 1932)
“The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or a woman.”
—Willa Cather (18761947)
“The true theater of history is therefore the temperate zone.”
—Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (17701831)
