Damai's Emphasis On The Society and National Education

In line with Singapore's holistic education system and policies, Damai Secondary School emphasizes the society and National Education.

Starting from lower secondary (Secondary 1 and Secondary 2 pupils, normally those aged 12 to 14), Damaians are given opportunities to serve society, and to understand the virtues of National Education. This is achieved by means of Community Involvement Programmes, through their curriculum and their CCAs. Flag Days, beach and park cleaning, and other volunteer works are examples.

Besides this, Damai has cooperated with many charitable organisations (such as Moral Elderly Care Centre of Bedok North) to organise and/or participate in community work.

There is an annual National Education Learning Journey for all Damaians. Based on their academic levels, students visit different places of heritage in Singapore. This provides them with actual experience of Singapore's history and heritage.

Damai has set up a National Education committee, supported by student NE ambassadors. (The NE ambassadors are named by DMSS Humanities Department). The DMSS NE committee is responsible for the planning of NE activities in DMSS, and for the NE-related facilities in DMSS.

NE-related facilities in Damai consist of a mini NE garden, a NE corner at one of the staircases, and a NE concept flowchart mural just outside the school canteen.

Famous quotes containing the words emphasis, society, national and/or education:

Coming to terms with the rhythms of women’s lives means coming to terms with life itself, accepting the imperatives of the body rather than the imperatives of an artificial, man-made, perhaps transcendentally beautiful civilization. Emphasis on the male work-rhythm is an emphasis on infinite possibilities; emphasis on the female rhythms is an emphasis on a defined pattern, on limitation.
    Margaret Mead (1901–1978)

I love London society! I think it has immensely improved. It is entirely composed now of beautiful idiots and brilliant lunatics. Just what Society should be.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

Being a gentleman is the number one priority, the chief question integral to our national life.
    Edward Fox (b. 1934)

You are told a lot about your education, but some beautiful, sacred memory, preserved since childhood, is perhaps the best education of all. If a man carries many such memories into life with him, he is saved for the rest of his days. And even if only one good memory is left in our hearts, it may also be the instrument of our salvation one day.
    Feodor Dostoyevsky (1821–1881)
