Culture of Guyana

Culture Of Guyana

Guyanese culture reflects the influence of African, Indian and Nepalese, Amerindian, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and British cultures.

Guyana is one of a few mainland territories of South America that is considered to be a part of the Caribbean region. Guyanese culture shares many commonalities with the cultures of islands in the West Indies, particularly in the coastal regions of the country (where the majority of the population is concentrated). Connections to other South American cultures also play an important part in Guyanese culture. The influence of Brazilian culture, for example, is particularly visible in the south of the country.

Famous quotes containing the words culture of and/or culture:

Unthinking people will often try to teach you how to do the things which you can do better than you can be taught to do them. If you are sure of all this, you can start to add to your value as a mother by learning the things that can be taught, for the best of our civilization and culture offers much that is of value, if you can take it without loss of what comes to you naturally.
    D.W. Winnicott (20th century)

The first time many women hold their tiny babies, they are apt to feel as clumsy and incompetent as any man. The difference is that our culture tells them they’re not supposed to feel that way. Our culture assumes that they will quickly learn how to be a mother, and that assumption rubs off on most women—so they learn.
    Pamela Patrick Novotny (20th century)
