The New Cromer and District Hospital
A feasibility study undertaken in 2006 demonstrated that it would be possible to redevelop the existing hospital site and to relocate existing services into the new hospital whilst creating minimal disruption to most existing services.
The tender for the new hospital was won by Mansell which is a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty and a planning application was submitted to North Norfolk District Council in November 2008. It is expected that work will begin in 2009 with the new hospital completed in 2011. The hospital is being designed by architects Purcell Miller Tritton and a Swaffham-based Mansell team will undertake the construction work.
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced on July 28, 2008, that the long-awaited new hospital would cost £26 million: £14 million of the Bernstein legacy money and £12 million of the NHS Foundation Trust's own funds. The work was scheduled to be completed by 2011.
In June 2009 the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced the project would be scaled back to a £15 million project. The decision was reportedly taken as result of the global recession and pressure on public spending.
On May 12, 2010, North Norfolk District Council granted planning permission for the new £15 million hospital and construction work started in Autumn 2010 with completion due by Autumn 2012. BBC News, Work starts on new Cromer Hospital
