Closing Down Geocities
Geocities was a popular web hosting service founded in 1994. At one point it was the 3rd most-browsed site on the World Wide Web. Yahoo purchased Geocities in 1999. Ten years later Yahoo closed Geocities, deleting millions of web pages in the process. In September 2009, a month before it was closed by Yahoo, GeoCities received 10,477,049 unique visitors.
