Tickell is the son of writer Jerrard Tickell and Renée Tickell née Haynes (a great-granddaughter of Thomas Henry Huxley). After secondary education at Westminster School as a King's Scholar, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, graduating in 1952 with first class honours in Modern History. He did his national service in the Coldstream Guards as a 2nd Lieutenant from 1952-54.
