Creation and Annihilation Operators in Quantum Field Theories
In quantum field theories and many-body problems one works with sums of terms where the are complex numbers, whereas the are creation rsp. annihilation operators, which enhance (rsp. reduce) the eigenvalues of the number operator, by 1, in analogy to the harmonic oscillator. The indices reflect the behaviour of spacetime and are higher-order entities, e.g. quadrupels for particles without spin. The number operators assume all non-negative integer values, and the nontrivial commutation relations are where is the commutator bracket while is the well-known Kronecker delta.
This is true for bosons, whereas for fermions the commutator must be replaced by the anticommutator, As a consequence, in the fermionic case the number operator has only the eigenvalues 0 and 1.

Famous quotes containing the words creation, annihilation, quantum, field and/or theories:
“Books choose their authors; the act of creation is not entirely a rational and conscious one.”
—Salman Rushdie (b. 1947)
“How can anyone be interested in war?that glorious pursuit of annihilation with its ceremonious bellowings and trumpetings over the mangling of human bones and muscles and organs and eyes, its inconceivable agonies which could have been prevented by a few well- chosen, reasonable words. How, why, did this unnecessary business begin? Why does anyone want to read about itthis redundant human madness which men accept as inevitable?”
—Margaret Anderson (18861973)
“A personality is an indefinite quantum of traits which is subject to constant flux, change, and growth from the birth of the individual in the world to his death. A character, on the other hand, is a fixed and definite quantum of traits which, though it may be interpreted with slight differences from age to age and actor to actor, is nevertheless in its essentials forever fixed.”
—Hubert C. Heffner (19011985)
“Is not the tremendous strength in men of the impulse to creative work in every field precisely due to their feeling of playing a relatively small part in the creation of living beings, which constantly impels them to an overcompensation in achievement?”
—Karen Horney (18851952)
“A work of art that contains theories is like an object on which the price tag has been left.”
—Marcel Proust (18711922)
