Crazy Fish

Butis butis, commonly known as crazy fish or upside down sleeper, is a species of sleeper goby belonging to the genus Butis. They are small drably colored fish, reaching a maximum length of only 69 to 155 mm (2.7 to 6.1 in). They are predatory and are known for their behavior of swimming vertically – or even upside down – while hunting. They inhabit brackish and freshwater coastal habitats of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.

Crazy fish were first described by the Scottish naturalist Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in 1822. They are classified under the family Eleotridae.

Famous quotes containing the words crazy and/or fish:

It’s this crazy weather we’ve been having:
Falling forward one minute, lying down the next
Among the loose grasses and soft, white, nameless flowers.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

The laying of fish on the embers,
    the taste of the fish,
the feel of the texture of bread,
    the round and the half-loaf,
    the grain of a petal,
    the rain-bow and the rain.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)
