Crawford Hall is a volleyball arena for UC Irvine. Crawford Hall Gym is where the men's and women's volleyball matches are held and is one of the top 25 largest volleyball-only facilities in the nation. The gym seats 1,400 and also houses the UC Irvine intercollegiate athletics offices. The Crawford Hall Complex, in addition to housing the athletic administration offices, also includes sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and student-athlete academic support services. The facility's outdoor breezeway is also informally recognized within the UC Irvine community as the rehearsal space for hip hop dance team Kaba Modern.
Crawford Hall is one of nine original buildings designed by William Pereira that were present when the campus opened in 1965. Cased in cylindrical concrete panels and perched atop a small hill, it has a castle-like presence when viewed from the road. It is attached to a smaller administrative building by an arched, covered walkway which spans a landscaped courtyard between the two. Originally named "Campus Hall", it served as a multi-purpose facility prior to construction of the first Student Center in the 1980s.
Famous quotes containing the words crawford and/or hall:
“[Asked by an interviewer, What do YOU want to be?]: What people want me to be.”
—Joan Crawford (19081977)
“I may be able to spot arrowheads on the desert but a refrigerator is a jungle in which I am easily lost. My wife, however, will unerringly point out that the cheese or the leftover roast is hiding right in front of my eyes. Hundreds of such experiences convince me that men and women often inhabit quite different visual worlds. These are differences which cannot be attributed to variations in visual acuity. Man and women simply have learned to use their eyes in very different ways.”
—Edward T. Hall (b. 1914)
