Craig Retroazimuthal Projection

The Craig retroazimuthal map projection was created by James Ireland Craig in 1909. It is a cylindrical projection preserving the direction from any place to another, predetermined place while avoiding some of the bizarre distortion of the Hammer retroazimuthal projection. It is sometimes known as the Mecca projection because Craig, who had worked in Egypt as a cartographer, created it to help Muslims find their qibla. The projection is defined by:

given latitude, longitude relative to the fixed location, and latitude of the fixed location .

The above equation has a discontinuity at ; to resolve this, at 0° longitude, take, the ratio's continuous completion.

Famous quotes containing the words craig and/or projection:

Is that the Craig Jurgesen that Teddy Roosevelt gave you?... And you used it at San Juan Hill defending liberty. Now you want to destroy it.
    Laurence Stallings (1894–1968)

Those who speak of our culture as dead or dying have a quarrel with life, and I think they cannot understand its terms, but must endlessly repeat the projection of their own desires.
    Muriel Rukeyser (1913–1980)
