Counts Per Minute

Ionising radiation intensity is sometimes expressed as being a rate of counts per unit time registered by a radiation monitoring instrument. This measurement must not be confused with disintegrations per unit time, which represents the rate of atomic disintegration events that are taking place in the source of the radiation. Both counts and disintegrations can be expressed as a total amount integrated over any time period, but cps and cpm are generally accepted practical count rate measurements. Note that radiation intensity is the count rate, but this does not take into account the energy levels of the radiation being measured.

Famous quotes containing the words counts and/or minute:

Talent counts thirty percent; appearance counts seventy.
    Chinese proverb.

You don’t want a general houseworker, do you? Or a traveling companion, quiet, refined, speaks fluent French entirely in the present tense? Or an assistant billiard-maker? Or a private librarian? Or a lady car-washer? Because if you do, I should appreciate your giving me a trial at the job. Any minute now, I am going to become one of the Great Unemployed. I am about to leave literature flat on its face. I don’t want to review books any more. It cuts in too much on my reading.
    Dorothy Parker (1893–1967)
