Governor John J. McKeithen signed the legislation establishing CODOFIL. It was McKeithen's former campaign manager and executive secretary, Gus Weill, a native of Lafayette, who strongly urged his boss to create the agency.

CODOFIL is empowered "to do any and all things necessary to accomplish the development, utilization, and preservation of the French language as found in the State of Louisiana for the cultural, economic, and touristic benefit of the State.” The state authorized CODOFIL to cooperate with and advise other state agencies, as well as to receive donations and grants from individuals, corporations, and governments.

Famous quotes containing the word origin:

In the woods in a winter afternoon one will see as readily the origin of the stained glass window, with which Gothic cathedrals are adorned, in the colors of the western sky seen through the bare and crossing branches of the forest.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

They give us, now and then, some of those luxurious sterile emotions that have a certain charm for the weak.... They are simply cheques that men draw on a bank where they have no account.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

The essence of morality is a questioning about morality; and the decisive move of human life is to use ceaselessly all light to look for the origin of the opposition between good and evil.
    Georges Bataille (1897–1962)
