Extensions To Conway's Symbols
The above operations allow all of the semiregular polyhedrons and Catalan solids to be generated from regular polyhedrons. Combined many higher operations can be made, but many interesting higher order polyhedra require new operators to be constructed.
For example, geometric artist George W. Hart created an operation he called a propellor, and another reflect to create mirror images of the rotated forms.
- p - "propellor" (A rotation operator that creates quadrilaterals at the vertices). This operation is self-dual: dpX=pdX.
- r - "reflect" - makes the mirror image of the seed; it has no effect unless the seed was made with s or g.

Famous quotes containing the words extensions, conway and/or symbols:
“The psychological umbilical cord is more difficult to cut than the real one. We experience our children as extensions of ourselves, and we feel as though their behavior is an expression of something within us...instead of an expression of something in them. We see in our children our own reflection, and when we dont like what we see, we feel angry at the reflection.”
—Elaine Heffner (20th century)
“Everybody gets pinched but you did it right. You told them nothing and they got nothing. You learned the two greatest things in life: Never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut.”
—Nicholas Pileggi, U.S. screenwriter, and Martin Scorsese. Jimmy Conway (Robert DeNiro)
“If the Americans, in addition to the eagle and the Stars and Stripes and the more unofficial symbols of bison, moose and Indian, should ever need another emblem, one which is friendly and pleasant, then I think they should choose the grapefruit. Or rather the half grapefruit, for this fruit only comes in halves, I believe. Practically speaking, it is always yellow, always just as fresh and well served. And it always comes at the same, still hopeful hour of the morning.”
—Johan Huizinga (18721945)
