Studies of CDA
Continuous descent approaches (CDAs) have noise and emission benefits in low traffic environments based upon the study at the Louisville airport.
The noise and emission benefits derived for the nighttime arrivals at the Louisville airport are well documented scientifically, however, the implementation of full-time continuous descent approaches at Los Angeles International Airport were done with altitudes that were exactly opposite as to what was done at Louisville. CDA's utilized in high traffic environments must be kept at levels lower than conventional step-down approaches, otherwise, the jets will catch up with one another. This negates the noise and emission benefits.
Studies at a number of airports began in approximately 1999, and continued through 2004-2006. It appears that procedures were adopted by some airports such as London Heathrow around 2003-2004. NASA continued to conduct studies into the EDA technique through 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words studies of and/or studies:
“His life itself passes deeper in nature than the studies of the naturalist penetrate; himself a subject for the naturalist. The latter raises the moss and bark gently with his knife in search of insects; the former lays open logs to their core with his axe, and moss and bark fly far and wide. He gets his living by barking trees. Such a man has some right to fish, and I love to see nature carried out in him.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“These studies which stimulate the young, divert the old, are an ornament in prosperity and a refuge and comfort in adversity; they delight us at home, are no impediment in public life, keep us company at night, in our travels, and whenever we retire to the country.”
—Marcus Tullius Cicero (10643 B.C.)
