Constitution Avenue - Rebuilding Project

Rebuilding Project

The city government began a rebuilding project of Constitution Avenue between 15th and 23rd Streets, N.W., in April 2011. The $10.3 million project included replacement of the underlying concrete slabs, and the asphalt surface over it. Curbs, crosswalks, lights, and sidewalks were also replaced.

Famous quotes containing the words rebuilding and/or project:

But look what we have built ... low-income projects that become worse centers of delinquency, vandalism and general social hopelessness than the slums they were supposed to replace.... Cultural centers that are unable to support a good bookstore. Civic centers that are avoided by everyone but bums.... Promenades that go from no place to nowhere and have no promenaders. Expressways that eviscerate great cities. This is not the rebuilding of cities. This is the sacking of cities.
    Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)

Indigenous to Minnesota, and almost completely ignored by its people, are the stark, unornamented, functional clusters of concrete—Minnesota’s grain elevators. These may be said to express unconsciously all the principles of modernism, being built for use only, with little regard for the tenets of esthetic design.
—Federal Writers’ Project Of The Wor, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
