Famous quotes containing the words conservative, central and/or office:

The Japanese are, to the highest degree, both aggressive and unaggressive, both militaristic and aesthetic, both insolent and polite, rigid and adaptable, submissive and resentful of being pushed around, loyal and treacherous, brave and timid, conservative and hospitable to new ways.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)

But the central wisdom, which was old in infancy, is young in fourscore years, and dropping off obstructions, leaves in happy subjects the mind purified and wise.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Reason is, and only ought to be, the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them.
    David Hume (1711–1776)
