Damage Prevention
Thermal sensors in some CPUs and GPUs can shut down the computer when high temperatures are detected, although this may not guarantee safe operation.
An integrated circuit may also shut down parts of itself when maximal performance is not required, as when idling, or the clock speed may be reduced under low workloads or when temperature is high, reducing power consumption and hence heat generation.

Famous quotes containing the words damage and/or prevention:
“I learned early to understand that there is no such condition in human affairs as absolute truth. There is only truth as people see it, and truth, even in fact, may be kaleidoscopic in its variety. The damage such perception did to me I have felt ever since ... I could never belong entirely to one side of any question.”
—Pearl S. Buck (18921973)
“... if this world were anything near what it should be there would be no more need of a Book Week than there would be a of a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.”
—Dorothy Parker (18931967)
