Formula
The ratio is calculated by the following formula:
- , where
- = cylinder bore (diameter)
- = piston stroke length
- = clearance volume. It is the volume of the combustion chamber (including head gasket). This is the minimum volume of the space at the end of the compression stroke, i.e. when the piston reaches top dead center (TDC). Because of the complex shape of this space, it is usually measured directly rather than calculated.

Famous quotes containing the word formula:
“I feel like a white granular mass of amorphous crystalsmy formula appears to be isomeric with Spasmotoxin. My aurochloride precipitates into beautiful prismatic needles. My Platinochloride develops octohedron crystals, with a fine blue florescence. My physiological action is not indifferent. One millionth of a grain injected under the skin of a frog produced instantaneous death accompanied by an orange blossom odor.”
—Lafcadio Hearn (18501904)
“I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failurewhich is: Try to please everybody.”
—Herbert B. Swope (18821958)
“My formula for greatness in human beings is amor fati: that one wants to change nothing, neither forwards, nor backwards, nor in all eternity. Not merely to endure necessity, still less to hide itall idealism is mendacity in the face of necessitybut rather to love it.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
