Compact Muon Solenoid - Physics Goals

Physics Goals

The main goals of the experiment are:

  • to explore physics at the TeV scale
  • to discover the Higgs boson
  • to look for evidence of physics beyond the standard model, such as supersymmetry, or extra dimensions
  • to study aspects of heavy ion collisions.

The ATLAS experiment, at the other side of the LHC ring is designed with similar goals in mind, and the two experiments are designed to complement each other both to extend reach and to provide corroboration of findings.

Famous quotes containing the words physics and/or goals:

... it is as true in morals as in physics that all force is imperishable; therefore the consequences of a human action never cease.
    Tennessee Claflin (1846–1923)

Whoever sincerely believes that elevated and distant goals are as little use to man as a cow, that “all of our problems” come from such goals, is left to eat, drink, sleep, or, when he gets sick of that, to run up to a chest and smash his forehead on its corner.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)
