Championship History
In the late 1980s CMLL left the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) to avoid the politics of the NWA. In 1991 CMLL decided to create a series of World Championships, one of which was the for the Light Heavyweight division. CMLL held a 16 man tournament to determine the first champion. The finals saw Jerry Estrada defeat Pierroth, Jr. In 1996 the then champion Dr. Wagner, Jr. lost the title to Aquarius on a show in Japan but the title change was never officially recognized by CMLL. 8 days later Dr. Wagner, Jr. won the title back but since it's not officially recognized CMLL considers Dr. Wagner, Jr. a two time champion and not a three time champion.
