New York

The New York needle was erected in Central Park (40°46′46.67″N 73°57′55.44″W / 40.7796306°N 73.9654°W / 40.7796306; -73.9654) on February 22, 1881. It was secured in May 1877 by judge Elbert E. Farman, the then-United States Consul General at Cairo, as a gift from Khedive for the United States remaining a friendly neutral as the European powers–France and Britain–maneuvered to secure political control of the Egyptian Government.

Famous quotes containing the word york:

Then I discovered that my son had learned something new. For the first time, he was able to give a proper kiss, puckering up his lips and enfolding my face in his arms. “Kees Dada,” he said as he bussed me on the nose and cheeks. No amount of gratification at work could have compensated for that moment.
—Donald H. Bell. “Conflicting Interests,” New York Times Magazine (July 31, 1983)

New York has never learnt the art of growing old by playing on all its pasts. Its present invents itself, from hour to hour, in the act of throwing away its previous accomplishments and challenging the future. A city composed of paroxysmal places in monumental reliefs.
    Michel de Certeau (1925–1986)
