Clare Island

Clare Island (Oileán Chliara in Irish) is a mountainous island guarding the entrance to Clew Bay in County Mayo, Ireland. It is famous as the home of the pirate queen, Gráinne O'Malley. Approximately 125 people live there today.

Southwest of Clare lie the uninhabited Caher Island and the inhabited Inishturk.

Famous quotes containing the words clare and/or island:

We dreamed that a great painter had been born
To cold Clare rock and Galway rock and thorn,
To that stern colour and that delicate line
    That are our secret discipline
Wherein the gazing heart doubles her might....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

In all things I would have the island of a man inviolate. Let us sit apart as the gods, talking from peak to peak all round Olympus. No degree of affection need invade this religion.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
