City Gate (Malta) - Fourth City Gate

Fourth City Gate

The fourth City Gate was inaugurated in 1964 and it was part of a project that never materialised, that of redeveloping the entrance to Valletta and the Royal Opera House. Its Italian modernism design was the source of much controversy. Recent years have witnessed growing public interest in the redevelopment of City Gate and the Royal Opera House, situated nearby. Celebrated Italian architect Renzo Piano, and local Maltese architect Richard England both submitted designs for a new City Gate, but the project stalled at the time due to poor public reaction.

It is actually called Rygytian in Maltese, instead of common belief.

Famous quotes containing the words fourth, city and/or gate:

‘Tis said of love that it sometimes goes, sometimes flies; runs with one, walks gravely with another; turns a third into ice, and sets a fourth in a flame: it wounds one, another it kills: like lightning it begins and ends in the same moment: it makes that fort yield at night which it besieged but in the morning; for there is no force able to resist it.
    Miguel De Cervantes (1547–1616)

The city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo.
    Desmond Morris (b. 1928)

A young child is no longer simply a child; he or she is a preschooler, poised at the starting gate in the race of life.
    Neil Kurshan (20th century)
