Cincinnati Police Department - History

History

When Cincinnati incorporated as a village in 1802, a ‘night watch’ was established, primarily to guard against fire, but also to ensure the peace. The organization of a police force similar to those in other cities came in 1859 with the appointment of the first police commissioner.

Cincinnati also has a museum dedicated to their police force, known as The Greater Cincinnati Police Historical Society Museum.

In 2012, after 150 years, the Cincinnati Police Department has replaced the white shirt and hat uniforms with LAPD blue and optional hat uniforms.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I cannot be much pleased without an appearance of truth; at least of possibility—I wish the history to be natural though the sentiments are refined; and the characters to be probable, though their behaviour is excelling.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)

It may be well to remember that the highest level of moral aspiration recorded in history was reached by a few ancient Jews—Micah, Isaiah, and the rest—who took no count whatever of what might not happen to them after death. It is not obvious to me why the same point should not by and by be reached by the Gentiles.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

Humankind has understood history as a series of battles because, to this day, it regards conflict as the central facet of life.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)
