Cielo Drive - The Band Name

The Band Name

The band's name Cielo Drive, (pronounced See-ell-oh) is a reference to where the killings of Sharon Tate and her houseguests by Charles Manson and his 'Family' took place, at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles, California.

The band were formerly known as Near Death Experiment, which was the title of Sean Porteous' first solo album. A name based upon Porteous close call with death in 2002 and how it changes his life for the better. However, they soon felt they needed to change it after venues refused to let them play because of their "dark and gothic sounding name."

Porteous says they changed it to Cielo Drive because

I have long had an obsession with serial killers and murderers and how their minds work, and one person who interested me a lot was Charles Manson. Not that I condone what he believed in, but how he was able to brainwash those people into committing extremely despicable killings for him. And Cielo Drive was the place of where the most infamous of those killings took place. And so, after changing are name, we decided on Cielo Drive, because to the everyday man it sounds like a really upbeat name, but when you look closer into it, its very dark, which in a lot of cases, is somewhat like our music. So that way, its a big 'fuck you' to all the people that didn't let us in before, but will now.
