The Albanian Apostolic Church or the Church of Caucasian Albania was an ancient independent autocephalous church. It later fell under the religious jurisdiction of the Armenian Apostolic Church that existed from the 5th century to 1830 and was centered in Caucasian Albania, a region mostly located in present day Azerbaijan. It was one of the earliest national Christian churches.
In the early 8th century, the church tried to break away from the Armenian Church and embrace Chalcedonianism, but this attempt was foiled by the Armenians with the help of the Arabs.
In medieval times, the monastery of Gandzasar served as the See of the Caucasian Albanian Catholicate, which continued to exist until 1828 (or 1836) when it was formally abolished by the Russian authorities.

Famous quotes containing the words church of and/or church:
“If Jesus, or his likeness, should now visit the earth, what church of the many which now go by his name would he enter? Or, if tempted by curiosity, he should incline to look into all, which do you think would not shut the door in his face?... It seems to me ... that as one who loved peace, taught industry, equality, union, and love, one towards another, Jesus were he alive at this day, would recommend you to come out of your churches of faith, and to gather into schools of knowledge.”
—Frances Wright (17951852)
“Do you see this egg? With this you can topple every theological theory, every church or temple in the world.”
—Denis Diderot (17131784)
