Chum Saeng District - History

History

Chum Saeng is an old district of Nakhon Sawan. The government separated some part of Mueang district to establish Tambon Koei Chai. In 1903, the Interior ministry upgraded the tambon to be Amphoe Phan Lan, named after the central tambon. A few years later, the name was changed back to Koei Chai again. The district office was moved to the west bank of the Nan River and renamed to be Amphoe Chum Saeng in 1915.

The name Chum Saeng in Thai is the name of a herb tree that look like Chaeng trees (ต้นแจง) (Maerua siamensis (Kurz) Pax.). Another possible origin of the name may date back the reign of King Taksin, when in the area was a weapon warehouse, named Khlang Saeng (คลังแสง) in Thai.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

A great proportion of the inhabitants of the Cape are always thus abroad about their teaming on some ocean highway or other, and the history of one of their ordinary trips would cast the Argonautic expedition into the shade.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

All history attests that man has subjected woman to his will, used her as a means to promote his selfish gratification, to minister to his sensual pleasures, to be instrumental in promoting his comfort; but never has he desired to elevate her to that rank she was created to fill. He has done all he could to debase and enslave her mind; and now he looks triumphantly on the ruin he has wrought, and say, the being he has thus deeply injured is his inferior.
    Sarah M. Grimke (1792–1873)

What would we not give for some great poem to read now, which would be in harmony with the scenery,—for if men read aright, methinks they would never read anything but poems. No history nor philosophy can supply their place.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
