Christopher Chavasse - World War I

World War I

All four of the Chavasse brothers (Christopher, Noel, Aidan, and Bernard) served during the First World War. Christopher was a chaplain; Noel and Bernard served as medics. Aidan was wounded and went missing during a raid; the other three brothers each earned the Military Cross. Noel also became one of only three men to receive the Victoria Cross twice, the second posthumously. Christopher was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Military Division. He and Bernard survived the war.

Christopher's other decorations included the 1914 Star with clasp, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the French Croix de guerre.

Famous quotes containing the words war i, world and/or war:

    War is a fevered god
    who takes alike
    maiden and king and clod....
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

Automobiles are free of egotism, passion, prejudice and stupid ideas about where to have dinner. They are, literally, selfless. A world designed for automobiles instead of people would have wider streets, larger dining rooms, fewer stairs to climb and no smelly, dangerous subway stations.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

Catholics are necessarily at war with this age. That we are not more conscious of the fact, that we so often endeavour to make an impossible peace with it—that is the tragedy. You cannot serve God and Mammon.
    Eric Gill (1882–1940)
