Death
While working on a solo album that was to be titled Vulcan, Wood died in 1983 of pneumonia in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. The album had been recorded over the previous few years, primarily in a recording studio Wood had purchased. Following Wood's death, the Vulcan recordings remained in the possession of Wood's sister, Stephanie. With the consent of Stephanie Wood and after three years of research and preparation, the album was released by Esoteric Recordings in 2008.
Traffic recorded one more studio album, Far from Home (1994), after Wood's death. The album is dedicated to him, and the central figure on its front cover is a stick figure of a man playing flute.

“Could any death be so horrible as birth? Or any decrepitude so awful as childhood in a happy united God-fearing family?”
—Samuel Butler (18351902)
“Life is in the mouth; death is in the mouth.”

“Why does man freeze to death trying to reach the North Pole? Why does man drive himself to suffer the steam and heat of the Amazon? Why does he stagger his mind with the mathematics of the sky? Once the question mark has arisen in the human brain the answer must be found, if it takes a hundred years. A thousand years.”
—Walter Reisch (19031963)
