Choline Acetyltransferase - Function

Function

Cholinergic systems are implicated in numerous neurologic functions. Alteration in some cholinergic neurons may account for the disturbances of Alzheimer disease. The protein encoded by this gene synthesizes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Alternative splice variants that contain alternative 5' untranslated exons have been found. Three of the four described splice variants encode identical 69 kDa proteins, while one variant encodes both the 69 kDa and a larger 82 kDa protein.

  • Choline

  • Acetylcholine

It is often used as an immunohistochemical marker for motor neurons (motoneurons).

Famous quotes containing the word function:

Nobody seriously questions the principle that it is the function of mass culture to maintain public morale, and certainly nobody in the mass audience objects to having his morale maintained.
    Robert Warshow (1917–1955)

The function of literature, through all its mutations, has been to make us aware of the particularity of selves, and the high authority of the self in its quarrel with its society and its culture. Literature is in that sense subversive.
    Lionel Trilling (1905–1975)

Literature does not exist in a vacuum. Writers as such have a definite social function exactly proportional to their ability as writers. This is their main use.
    Ezra Pound (1885–1972)
