Choir of Chichester Cathedral

Choir Of Chichester Cathedral

The musical foundation of Chichester Cathedral consists of the Organist and Master of the Choristers, the Assistant Organist and the Organ Scholar; together with six singing men (called Lay Vicars), eighteen choristers, six probationers - and including a head chorister and a senior chorister (deputy head) who both wear a notable medallion on a red ribbon according to their office held. The choristers and probationers are all boarders at the Prebendal School, the cathedral's choir school]]. The lay vicars are professional singers who all have everyday jobs. The organists (organist and master of the choristers, assistant organist and organ scholar) and the lay vicars are given a house free of charge with their liturgical offices in the cathedral.

During school term, the cathedral has six sung services a week. As well as singing, choristers learn the piano and an orchestral instrument, spending at least eighteen hours a week on musical performance.

Famous quotes containing the words choir of, choir and/or cathedral:

    As night is withdrawn
From these sweet-springing meads and bursting boughs of May,
Dream, while the innumerable choir of day
    Welcome the dawn.
    Robert Bridges (1844–1930)

O thou, with dewy locks, who lookest down
Through the clear windows of the morning; turn
Thine angel eyes upon our western isle,
Which in full choir hails thy approach, O Spring!
    William Blake (1757–1827)

There’s a certain Slant of light,
    Winter Afternoons—
    That oppresses, like the Heft
    Of Cathedral Tunes—
    Emily Dickinson (1830–1886)
