Chinese Era Name - The Republic of China Era

The Republic of China Era

An era name could only be declared by the emperor before the Republic of China was established. The Republic of China retains the era system, and uses the name "Republic" (民國) for its official dating. The 1st year of the "Republic Era" was 1912. Therefore, 2011 is "the 100th year of the Republic Era" (民國100年).

Famous quotes containing the words republic, china and/or era:

People think they have taken quite an extraordinarily bold step forward when they have rid themselves of belief in hereditary monarchy and swear by the democratic republic. In reality, however, the state is nothing but a machine for the oppression of one class by another, and indeed in the democratic republic no less than in the monarchy.
    Friedrich Engels (1820–1895)

It all ended with the circuslike whump of a monstrous box on the ear with which I knocked down the traitress who rolled up in a ball where she had collapsed, her eyes glistening at me through her spread fingers—all in all quite flattered, I think. Automatically, I searched for something to throw at her, saw the china sugar bowl I had given her for Easter, took the thing under my arm and went out, slamming the door.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)

The era of long parades past an official podium filled with cold faces is gone. Celebrating is now a right, not a duty.
    Lothar De Maizière (b. 1940)
