Chinatown MRT Station - History

History

Provisions were made during the initial construction of this station for connection with future lines, which will serve developments in the New Downtown area, especially the integrated resort. The station will be an interchange with Stage 1 of the future Downtown Line, with the connecting station and tracks built under and perpendicular to the current station, beneath Cross Street. A new entrance and exit structure will be built near Hong Lim Complex as part of the Downtown Line station addition. Construction for the Downtown Line station commenced on 12 February 2008.

Before the station opened, the Singapore Civil Defence Force conducted the second ever Shelter Open House on 15–16 February 2003, together with Farrer Park, Serangoon and Hougang stations.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of the Victorian Age will never be written: we know too much about it.
    Lytton Strachey (1880–1932)

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)

... that there is no other way,
That the history of creation proceeds according to
    Stringent laws, and that things
Do get done in this way, but never the things
We set out to accomplish and wanted so desperately
    To see come into being.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
