Museum

The Institute has a small museum at Aldermanbury in the City of London which is mainly concerned with the history of fire fighting. In the 17th century insurance companies issued fire marks which their clients had to display on the insured property to show that they had purchased cover. The museum has a collection of fire marks and other artefacts relating to the history of fire insurance.

Famous quotes containing the word museum:

I never can pass by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York without thinking of it not as a gallery of living portraits but as a cemetery of tax-deductible wealth.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)

A Museum of fetishes would give special attention to the history of underwear.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

When I go into a museum and see the mummies wrapped in their linen bandages, I see that the lives of men began to need reform as long ago as when they walked the earth. I come out into the streets, and meet men who declare that the time is near at hand for the redemption of the race. But as men lived in Thebes, so do they live in Dunstable today.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
