Chartered Institute of Linguists

The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) was known as the Institute of Linguists and IoL before receiving its Royal Charter in 2005. The CIOL is a British professional and learned society for education founded in 1910, which serves to promote proficiency in modern languages worldwide.

Fellowship is awarded to linguists following election by existing Fellows and is regarded as a great honour. Other categories of membership are Student, Associate, Member and Chartered Linguist. The IoL Educational Trust is a registered charity and accredited Awarding Organisation.

The Institute's Patron is HRH Prince Michael of Kent.
